Lurking Virus Casts Shadow on 5th Retrovirus Conference

The war on AIDS is closer to the beginning than to the end.

That's the message from this year's 5th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, held February 1-5, 1998, in Chicago, Illinois.

Some 3,500 weary researchers trooped back to the trenches after hearing that testable HIV vaccine candidates are nowhere in sight, that the virus hides from potent drugs in cell and tissue sanctuaries, that protease inhibitors have insidious new toxicities, and that nobody is sure what to do about people who fail or can't afford the new drugs.
