Sterilized Women Have Higher Hysterectomy Risk

Women who have undergone sterilization are more likely to have a hysterectomy within five years after sterilization than non-sterilized women, according to a study in the February 1998 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

This association between tubal sterilization and hysterectomy does not differ by age at sterilization or by method of procedure.

Susan D. Hillis, PhD, and her colleagues in the U.S. Collaborative Review of Sterilization Working Group, the Division of Reproductive Health, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia, studied 7,718 women enrolled in a prospective, multicenter cohort study between 1978 and 1986. ...
