According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Conference on Cardiovascular Health: Coming Together for the 21st Century, held February 19-21, 1998, in San Francisco, California, "A causal relationship between serum cholesterol and risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) is well established. Evidence-based medicine has demonstrated the benefit of lipid lowering on preventing future cardiovascular events. Despite these facts, there has been skepticism toward aggressively treating women with hypercholesterolemia.
