Women, Ethnic Groups Wait Longer for Liver Transplantation

A study of the factors that influence how long a person in the U.S. who needs a liver transplant has to wait has shown that women, Hispanic-Americans, Asian-Americans, and children waited longer than other groups for transplants.

Conversely, foreign nationals and repeat transplant patients waited the least amount of time.

Although the data also showed that groups with longer waiting times are at risk of dying, this was not true for children. The study, published in the March 5, 1998, issue of Medical Care, also showed that foreign nationals received a disproportionate number of transplants at several transplant centers.
