Prescription Guidelines Not Geared to Older Women

Among its other findings, a recent study shows that older women can exercise at higher maximal aerobic power levels than those currently recommended.

In the latest issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Wendy Kohrt and associates presented the findings of their analysis of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) guidelines for quality and quantity of exercise related to cardiovascular health in adults as they relate to older women (aged 60-72 years) ("Prescribing Exercise Intensity for Older Women," J Am Geriatr Soc, 1998;46:129-133).
