FDA Approves Bone Density Measurement Device

Millions of women can now simply slide a foot into a machine the size of a computer printer and learn minutes later if they are at risk of crippling osteoporosis.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first bone tester that does not use X-rays: Hologic Inc.'s Sahara Bone Sonometer. It promises to make osteoporosis testing easy, portable, and cheap enough to reach areas of the country where women have had no access to such scans, the company says.

"Early diagnosis and treatment will improve the quality of life for millions of Americans who are at risk of fractures related to this condition," said U.S. Health and Human Services...
