History of Male Alcohol Abuse is Strongest Predictor of Acute Injury to Women

Alcohol use by their male partner may be a significant precipitating factor in domestic violence against women, a recent study suggests.

Demetrios N. Kyriacou and colleagues studied 46 women who presented to an emergency department (ED) with acute injury due to assault by their male partner. They wanted to determine if there was an association between predicted variables and injury to women from domestic violence.

"The development of effective prevention strategies for acute injury from domestic violence against women requires a better epidemiologic understanding of the major risk factors," said the researchers.
