Estrogen May Reduce Dementia in Women with Parkinson's Disease

Using estrogen could reduce the risk of dementia for women with Parkinson's disease, according to preliminary study results published in the April 1998 issue of the journal Neurology.

The study examined post-menopausal women with Parkinson's disease and the effect of estrogen use on dementia, according to neurologist Karen Marder, MD, of Columbia University in New York.

The women studied were from the same community; 87 had Parkinson's disease without dementia, 80 had dementia with Parkinson's disease, and 989 were healthy and did not have dementia.
