Choosing a Sensitive and Specific Chlamydia trachomatis Assay Without Increasing Patient and Laboratory Costs

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 98th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, held May 17-21, 1998, in Atlanta, Georgia, "Determining which Chlamydia trachomatis assay to use in a diagnostic setting can be an overwhelming task. Issues related to test sensitivity, specificity, patient costs and technical skill of the laboratory staff all influence the assay which is chosen. From May 1997 to August 1997, we evaluated the Gen-ProbeR PACER 2 and Amplified (TMA) Chlamydia trachomatis assays to determine which would serve as the better replacement for our present EIA method.
