Opposite Actions of Female Sex Steroids on Cysteamine-Induced Gastroduodenal Ulceration in the Rat

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 99th Annual Meeting of the American Gastroenterological Association, held May 16-20, 1998, in New Orleans, Louisiana, "We found that in female Wistar rats (200-220 g), cysteamine (400 mg/kg, s.c.) provoked macroscopic gastroduodenal mucosal injury (4.5 ± 0.6% and 12.9 ± 1.0% of total mucosal surface, respectively; n=7, p<0.001), an increase in microvascular permeability (assessed by the extravasation of albumin) in the stomach (57 ± 9 ml/g tissue, n=7, p<0.001) and duodenum (155 ± 6 ml /g tissue; n=7, p<0.001), and decreased gastroduodenal mucus level (assessed by the Alcian...
