Cervical Cancer (Increased Risk)

Variation in p53 Gene Linked to Greater Risk

Scientists have found that women who carry a particular variation of the tumor suppressor gene p53 are seven times more likely to develop cervical cancer that those who do not.

The findings were published in the May 21, 1998, issue of the journal Nature ("Role of a p53 Polymorphism in the Development of Human Papillomavirus-Associated Cancer").
