High Proportion of Women Seeking Abortion Report History of Abuse

An abused woman seeking outpatient abortion is more likely to cite relationship issues and not inform her partner of her decision to terminate the pregnancy than a non-abused woman, according to results of a small survey.

To gain an idea of the prevalence of domestic violence among women choosing to abort, Wake Forest University School of Medicine researchers S.S. Glander and colleagues assessed responses to a self-administered questionnaire of 486 such women ("The Prevalence of Domestic Violence Among Women Seeking Abortion," Obstetrics and Gynecology, June 1998;91(6):1002-1006).
