Metformin Increases Spontaneous and Clomiphene-Induced Ovulation in the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 80th Annual Meeting of The Endocrine Society, held June 24-27, 1998, in New Orleans, Louisiana, "Obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are relatively unresponsive to ovulation induction by clomiphene. We hypothesized that hyperinsulinemia impedes ovulation. To determine if treatment with an insulin-sensitizing agent would increase ovulation in obese women with PCOS, 61 obese women with PCOS were enrolled in a randomized, placebo-controlled study.
