DDAVP Appears Safe for Mother and Child

The use of synthetic 1-deamino-8-D-arginine-vasopressin (DDAVP) to manage diabetes insipidus (DI) during pregnancy appears to be safe.

A review of the literature published from 1976 to July 1997 and addressing DDAVP use in pregnant women with DI was conducted by J.G. Ray of McMaster University in Ontario, Canada ("DDAVP Use During Pregnancy: An Analysis of its Safety for Mother and Child," Obstet Gynecol Surv, July 1998;53(7):450-455).

Fifty-three cases were evaluated in 20 journal papers. An average dose of 29 (mu)g/day administered intranasally in these women (range: 7.5-100 (mu)g/day) provided effective management of DI.
