New Down Syndrome Risk Assessment May Be More Sensitive

The traditional way to assess whether a pregnant woman is at high risk of having a baby with trisomy 21, or Down syndrome, is her age. Invasive testing (requiring a needle into the womb) in pregnant women aged 37 years or older identifies about 30 percent of fetuses with the genetic condition.

Selection of a high-risk group by the mother's age plus her serum biochemistry during the middle period of pregnancy gives a better detection rate at 60 percent.

Dr. R. Snijders and colleagues from London, United Kingdom, for the Fetal Medicine Foundation First Trimester Screening Group, investigated the detection rate of a newer method of risk assessment. ...
