Hygiene, Behavior Implicated in Women With Symptoms But No Signs of UTI

A recent study from Sweden found that women with recurrent symptoms of urinary tract infection (UTI), but no evident pathogens, were more likely to practice poorer hygiene and to engage in certain sexual behaviors more commonly than asymptomatic women.

Uppsala University researchers K. Tchoudomirova and colleagues conducted a comparison study of women with recurrent symptoms of UTI but negative urine culture with no signs of infection and women with no such history ("History, Clinical Findings, Sexual Behavior, and Hygiene Habits in Women With and Without Recurrent Episodes of Urinary Symptoms," Acta Obstet Gynecol Scand, July 1998;77(6):654-659).
