Calcium Supplements Reduce PMS Symptoms

Women can reduce the physical and psychological symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) by taking calcium supplements, according to a new study by Columbia University, New York, researchers.

The study found that women who took 1,200 mg of calcium a day reduced their PMS symptoms by more than 50 percent. The findings were published in the September 1998 American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

PMS affects about 40 percent of women of childbearing age. Symptoms include bloating, pain, irritability, food cravings, malaise, migraines, and mood swings.
