Chernobyl Radiation Linked to Higher Levels of Thyroid Autoantibodies in Girls

Young people in Belarus who, as children or during fetal life, were exposed to radioactive iodine released during the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster are much more likely to have antibodies against the thyroid gland than children who escaped heavy radiation exposure, according to a study in the Lancet.

Although the study found no evidence of thyroid dysfunction in the young men and women whose blood was tested six to eight years after the disaster, the findings suggest that they may later develop autoimmune thyroid diseases, especially hypothyroidism (diminished production of thyroid hormone, causing low metabolic rate, weight gain, and somnolence).
