Although the study found no evidence of thyroid dysfunction in the young men and women whose blood was tested six to eight years after the disaster, the findings suggest that they may later develop autoimmune thyroid diseases, especially hypothyroidism (diminished production of thyroid hormone, causing low metabolic rate, weight gain, and somnolence).
