Anticonvulsant Therapy and Bone Mineral Density in Post-Menopausal Women

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Annual Meeting of the British Society for Rheumatology, held September 10-11, 1998, in Manchester, England, "Women aged over 65 years receiving anticonvulsant therapy have an almost threefold increased risk of hip fracture compared to healthy women of the same age. This risk remains increased two-fold at the hip independent of bone mineral density (BMD). Children and young adults taking anticonvulsants can have biochemical and histological evidence of osteomalacia with increased fracture risk.
