Nutritional Determinants of Acquisition and Loss of Bone Mineral Mass

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the European Congress on Osteoporosis, held September 11-15, 1998, in Berlin, Germany, "Bone mineral density (BMD) is the best predictor of fracture risk. It is determined by the amount of bone accumulated at the end of skeletal growth, the so-called peak bone mass, which is achieved for most parts of the skeleton by the end of the second decade, and by the amount of bone lost subsequently, as a consequence of menopause or aging. Various studies, including mother-daughter pairs analysis, estimate the contribution of genetics to the variance of peak bone mass as more than 70%.
