According to an abstract submitted by the author to the European Congress on Osteoporosis, held September 11-15, 1998, in Berlin, Germany, "Like hormonal deficiency and sedentary lifestyle, nutritional deficiencies are important determinants of bone loss and represent correctable risk factors of fragility fractures. This is true at any age but particularly in elderly people where adequate intakes of calcium (1,000-1,500 mg/day), vitamin D (400-800 IU/day), and vitamin K are important for the preservation of bone mass.
