Cost of Adding Contraceptive Coverage to Health Plans Minimal

The estimated maximum added cost of covering the full range of U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved reversible medical contraceptives in U.S. health plans that do not currently cover them is just $21.40 per employee per year, according to a new report by The Alan Guttmacher Institute.

Of this figure, $17.12 would be employers' costs and $4.28 employees' costs. The added cost for employers amounts to just $1.43 per month per employee, representing an increase of just 0.6 percent in employers' costs of providing employees with medical coverage. The cost would be less for those plans that cover at least some of these methods.
