Human Parathyroid Hormone Could Help Lower Fracture Risk for Estrogen-Deficient Women

Human parathyroid hormone, administered daily over a one-year period, prevented bone loss in young women who were severely estrogen deficient, according to an article in the September 23/30, 1998, issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA, 1998; 280:1067-1073). Joel S. Finkelstein, MD, of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and colleagues studied 43 women, aged 21 to 45, who suffered from endometriosis. To help reduce the symptoms of endometriosis, such as pelvic pain and cramps, the women received therapy with a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analog, nafarelin acetate.
