Birth control pills can sharply reduce the risk of ovarian cancer, and now researchers may have discovered why. Scientists reported in the September 9, 1998, issue of the Journal of the Society for Gynecologic Investigation that a hormone commonly found in oral contraceptives stimulates cell death in ovaries of macaque monkeys -- possibly forcing damaged cells to die before they can become malignant.
