NCI Trial Results Published

Researchers from the Breast Cancer Prevention Trial (BCPT) published a full report and update of the study in the September 16, 1998, Journal of the National Cancer Institute (Fisher et al., "Tamoxifen for Prevention of Breast Cancer: Report of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project P-1 Study," JNCI, Sept. 16, 1998;90(18)). With data through March 31, 1998, the BCPT now shows a 49 percent reduction in breast cancer incidence among the high-risk participants who took tamoxifen (NolvadexR, Zeneca Pharmaceuticals, Wilmington, Delaware), a drug used for the past two decades to treat breast cancer.
