New Recommendations for Adequate Dietary Intake of Vitamin D for Bone Health

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the European Congress on Osteoporosis, held September 11-15, 1998, in Berlin, Germany, "Vitamin D is essential for the development and maintenance of a healthy skeleton from birth until death. Vitamin D, as a nutrient, has been taken for granted because, unlike any other nutrient, vitamin D is unique in that it can be synthesised in the skin as a result of exposure to sunlight. Indeed, upwards of 90 to 100% of most human's vitamin D requirement comes from their every day casual exposure to sunlight. The skin has a huge capacity to produce vitamin D.
