New HPV DNA Testing May Help Identify Those at High Risk

Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been associated with most cervical dysplasias (pre-cancer) in women, and is an important co-factor in the cause of most cervical cancers. As the severity of dysplasia progresses towards cervical cancer, the prevalence of "high-risk" HPV types also increases.

The question has been raised to whether HPV testing may be used to better triage women with abnormal Papanicoulaou (Pap) tests before colposcopic assessments and biopsies are performed.
