Malaria in Pregnancy in Blantyre Malawi: A 12-Month Survey

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 47th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, scheduled to be held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, October 18-22, 1998, "In Blantyre, Malawi, malaria transmission is seasonal and moderate. We have studied the prevalence and density of malaria parasitemia in peripheral blood, placenta, and umbilical cord of women attending the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital Antenatal Clinic (4,000) and Labour Ward (600). Malaria parasitemia, detected in 49% of women, varied in prevalence from 55.7% in January to 33.5% in May. There was little difference in the prevalence of parasitemia in women of differing parities. ...
