Older Women Need To Continue Annual Pap Test

Older women, who tend to get less frequent Pap tests as they age, need to continue undergoing annual Pap exams since they have higher rates of invasive cervical cancer than women under 40, according to new data in the November 1998 issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Noting that most analyses of Pap test results have been on reproductive age women (under age 45), Herschel W. Lawson, MD, and colleagues from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) looked at women over age 40 in an analysis of data on 312,858 women who received at least one Pap test from October 1991 through June 1995 through the CDC's National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection...
