Colposcopic Appearance of Cervical Lesions Varies with Age

A recent study has shown that the morphology of cervical lesions associated with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) changes as women age. The finding prompted the researchers to recommend further testing of women age 35 or older whose colposcopic results suggest seemingly trivial "changes of doubtful significance."

D.M. Zahm and associates at the Friedrich Schiller University assessed age as a factor influencing CIN diagnosis ("Colposcopic Appearance of Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia is Age Dependent," American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, November 1998;179(5):1298-1304).
