Koo Sar pills are manufactured in Hong Kong and the pills are used by women to treat menstrual cramps, according to a report in the January 22, 1999, edition of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (Jung and Materna, "Adult Lead Poisoning from an Asian Remedy for Menstrual Cramps -- Connecticut, 1997").
Laboratory analysis confirmed the lead content of the pills. The lead content of pills from two packages of Koo Sar pills purchased at different shops in San Francisco, California, was 2.7 ppm...
