Paracervical Anesthesia Useful for Hysteroscopy and Endometrial Biopsy

In post-menopausal women, anesthesia injected at the junction of the cervix and vagina (paracervical anesthesia) effectively reduces pain and dangerous vasovagal reactions during hysteroscopy and biopsy, report Italian researchers.

Ettore Cicinelli, MD, and colleagues at the University of Bari in Bari, Italy, reported that the pain and side effects related to vagal stimulation experienced by patients during hysteroscopy may be particularly dangerous to post-menopausal women due to involutive uterine changes and a higher incidence of cardiovascular problems ("Paracervical Anesthesia for Hysteroscopy and Endometrial Biopsy in Post-menopausal Women," Journal of...
