Genital Tract HIV Detection in Women: Association with Plasma Viral Load, CD4 Cell Count, Antiretroviral Therapy, Mode of Transmission

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 6th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, held January 31 - February 4, 1999, in Chicago, Illinois, "Objectives: To evaluate HIV-1 RNA load in paired plasma and cervicovaginal lavage (CVL) specimens among women enrolled in the HIV Epidemiology Research (HER) study. To assess the relation of genital tract HIV-1 RNA to plasma viral load (PVL), CD4 count, antiviral therapy, mode of transmission. Methods: Cross-sectional study of 95 women with paired plasma and CVL specimens. HIV-1 RNA was detected by NASBA assay. The lower limit of detection was 400 copies/ml. Results: 59% were white,...
