Symptom Complex Revealed

Acute abdominal pain and urgency to defecate may signal intra-abdominal bleeding, which likely is due to ruptured ectopic pregnancy or ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Nicholas S. Hadjis, MD, of the University of Sasketchawan, Canada, and colleagues compared the sensitivity of this symptom complex to the classic diagnostic triads for these symptoms ("Acute Abdominal Pain and Urgency to Defecate in the Young and the Old: A Useful Symptom-Complex'" Journal of Emergency Medicine, March/April 1999;17(2):239-242).
