Folate and vitamin B-12 intake commonly is inadequate in the elderly, say researchers who believe both vitamins are essential for hearing via their effect on vascular function, cellular metabolism, and the nervous system.
Denise K. Houston, of the University of Georgia, and colleagues investigated this possibility and found these vitamins to be significantly associated with age-related hearing loss:
