Tamoxifen Urged for At-Risk Women

The largest group of cancer specialists in the U.S. is suggesting that doctors consider prescribing tamoxifen to tens of millions of healthy women to help prevent breast cancer.

The recommendation issued May 18, 1999, by the American Society of Clinical Oncology was based largely on earlier research showing that tamoxifen - available since 1978 as a treatment for breast cancer - can also cut women's risk of developing the disease almost in half.

The statement said tamoxifen "may be offered" to women who have at least a 1.7 percent risk of getting breast cancer over the next five years. That is considered a modestly increased risk. About 29 million...
