According to the authors' abstract of an article published in Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, "Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cross-sectional and longitudinal association of oral estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) and cognitive function in an older, nondemented sample of women. Methods: In a prospective cohort of 9,651 white women aged 65 years and older enrolled in the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures, a modified Mini-Mental Status Exam (mMMSE), and digit symbol substitution and Trails B tests were administered twice, 4 to 6 years apart.
