However, children whose mothers were being treated for the condition scored almost the same as children born to healthy mothers. These findings suggest that early detection and treatment of hypothyroidism in pregnant women may be a critical part of prenatal care.
The findings were reported by Dr. James Haddow in the August 19, 1999, issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. The study was partially funded by the U.S. National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).
