Intrathecal Bupivacaine Effective for Osteoporosis Pain

Continuous intrathecal bupivacaine effectively treats pain due to vertebral compression fractures from osteoporosis.

In the hope of filling a gap in pain management methods for relieving this type of pain, P.O. Dahm, of Goteborg University, Sweden, and associates investigated an intrathecal infusion of bupivacaine for long-term treatment in three patients ("Intrathecal Infusion of Bupivacaine With or Without Buprenorphine Relieved Intractable Pain in Three Patients with Vertebral Compression Fractures Caused by Osteoporosis," Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medication, July/August 1999;24(4):352-357).
