Osteoporosis a Problem for Women After Transplant

Women with low bone mineral density are especially at risk for fractures after lung transplantation, researchers report.

Although osteoporosis is known to be common in patients with end-stage pulmonary disease, prospective data on fracture incidence after lung transplantation are scarce.

Elizabeth Shane and colleagues of New York's Columbia University performed a prospective evaluation of the changes in bone mass, fracture incidence, and biochemical indices of bone and mineral metabolism in 30 patients who completed one year of observation after lung transplantation.
