According to an abstract submitted by the author to the 28th Annual Meeting of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology, held September 16-18, 1999, in Rockville, Maryland, "Nevirapine (NVP) is a potent non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor that has been shown to inactivate the human immuno-deficiency virus upon administration. Currently, attempts at reducing incidences of vertical transmission of the virus (mother-to-child) have focused on the use of pharmacological agents in 'birth canal cleansing' during child labor and delivery.
