Alosetron Effective in Women with IBS

Alosetron effectively relieves irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) in women, but not in men.

"In female irritable bowel syndrome patients with predominant diarrhea or alternating constipation and diarrhea, alosetron is effective in treatment of abdominal pain and discomfort and bowel-related symptoms," reported M. Camilleri, of the Mayo Foundation, and associates in a study of 370 patients ("Improvement in Pain and Bowel Function in Female Irritable Bowel Patients with Alosetron, a 5-HT3 Receptor Antagonist," Aliment Pharmacol Ther, September 1999;13(9):1149-1159).
