Bone Protein Found To Reduce Bone Loss Significantly

Researchers reported that injections of osteoprotegerin (OPG), one of the body's natural protectors against bone loss, reduced bone loss significantly in a study of postmenopausal women.

OPG, a natural bone protein, had been shown effective in earlier animal studies to prevent the formation of osteoclasts, the cells responsible for bone degradation or resorption. Researchers reported their findings at the 21st Annual Meeting of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) held in St. Louis, Missouri.

Bone loss is associated with diseases such as osteoporosis, where progressive thinning of the bone can lead to fractures and deformity. ...
