Empirical Management of Gonorrhea and Chlamydia Lacking in Emergency Departments

Empirical treatment in the emergency department (ED) of women screened for Neisseria gonnorhoeae (GC) and Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) is inconsistent.

In a study presented at the American College of Emergency Physicians Research Forum, held October 11-12, 1999, in Las Vegas, Nevada, D.R. Weist, of Albany Medical College, New York, and associates described empirical treatment of GC/CT in an urban teaching hospital among women screened for these infections ("Empirical Treatment of Gonorrhea and Chlamydia in the Emergency Department"). They noted that these women received such treatment less than a quarter of the time.
