Metabolic Predictors of Obesity Differ Between Black Women and White Women

Metabolic predictors of obesity are not the same for black postmenopausal women as they are for their white counterparts.

B.J. Nicklas, Baltimore Veterans Administration Medical Center, and colleagues looked at resting metabolic rate (RMR), fat oxidation, and maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max ) as predictors of obesity in obese (BMI = 34 ± 2 kg/m2), postmenopausal, black women (n=20) and white women (n=20). Study subjects were matched for fat mass and lean mass.
