Findings Suggest Number of Embryos Transferred Can Be Reduced

Women may be able to limit the number of embryos they transfer for in vitro fertilization (IVF), reducing the risk of multiple birth and possible complications without reducing their likelihood of becoming pregnant, according to an article in the November 17, 1999, issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Laura A. Schieve, PhD, Lynne S. Wilcox, MD, and colleagues from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, Georgia, analyzed data on 35,554 in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures performed at 300 U.S. clinics in 1996.
