Domestic Violence Against Women a Global Health Problem

In a study conducted in northern India, almost half of the men interviewed reported abusing their wives, suggesting that wife abuse is a common problem in India as it is in many other countries, according to an article in the November 24, 1999, issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

Sandra L. Martin, PhD, from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA, and colleagues surveyed a total of 6,632 married men, aged 15 to 65 years, who lived with their wives to examine relationships between men's reports of wife abuse and reproductive health issues in northern India.
