Measurement of Fetal Oxygen Levels May Reduce Cesarean Sections

The addition of fetal pulse oximetry to the commonly used electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) resulted in a 50% reduction in potentially unnecessary cesarean sections in patients with abnormal EFM patterns.

Gary A. Dildy, MD, Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo and the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City., and colleagues from the Mallinckrodt (Nellcor) Fetal Oximetry Research Groups reported their findings at the 20th Annual Meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM), held February 2-5, 2000, in Miami, Florida.
