Case Study Identifies High Carrier Rate in Congo

A study has identified a high prevalence of GB virus C (GBV-C)/hepatitis G virus (HGV) carriers in some pregnant women of Kinshasa, Congo.

The study was reported in the February 2000 issue of the Journal of Medical Virology.

According to H.F. Liu and colleagues, the carrier rate in 97 pregnant women of that region was 10.3%. They found that the rates for infection by other viruses were lower. For example, the rate for hepatitis C virus was 1%, the HIV rate was 4.1%, and the rate for human T-lymphocyte virus was 0% according to the report ("High prevalence of GB virus C/hepatitis G virus in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo: A...
