HIV Positive Women Show Abnormal Cytology

Women who are positive for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) tend to show a progression toward abnormal results on their Pap smears, scientists reported at the 7th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections.

S. Massad and other study authors reported that in a six-site, 3-1/2-year cohort study of 1,860 women infected with HIV, Pap smear cytology reports tended to demonstrate abnormal results.

HIV RNA, CD4 counts, and Pap smears were analyzed in the HIV infected women as well as in 530 women who were negative for HIV. Researchers used the Bethesda criteria for reading smears, they said in their conference report entitled "Incidence...
